Why it mattersWhy carrier screening matters.

Most people who carry a genetic condition have no family history of it. Around 80% of carriers are completely unaware until testing is done.

Screening reveals hidden risks that family history alone can’t detect, for you and any future children.

How inheritance works

How inherited conditions are passed on

Being a carrier doesn’t mean you’re affected.

You carry two copies of most genes, one from each parent. A carrier has one typical copy and one altered copy, and the working copy keeps them healthy, usually without ever knowing. Most screened conditions are recessive: a child is only affected if both parents pass on an altered copy.

When both partners carry the same change, each pregnancy has:

That’s why these conditions can appear with no family history, and why both partners are screened.

A few follow other patterns, such as X-linked inheritance.

Your report

What’s included in your Carrier Report

Your Carrier Screening Report provides a clear, condition-by-condition breakdown of your results across 500+ inherited conditions.

  • A clear overview of whether you carry any gene variants linked to inherited conditions, including clinical relevance and inheritance pattern.

  • The specific genes and variants analysed by next-generation sequencing, classified per ACGS and ClinGen, including gene coordinates, zygosity, and classification.

  • Each detected variant connected to its medical condition, with a concise summary of the disorder, associated risks, and inheritance pattern.

  • How genetic inheritance works (autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, and X-linked patterns) and how results could affect you and your family.

  • Places your results in context with global carrier-frequency data across different backgrounds.

  • Whether your partner should also be screened, based on the inheritance type of any identified variants.

  • Why no test can fully eliminate risk, due to genetic variability and evolving science.

  • Definitions of key genetic terms and how results were interpreted, covering ClinVar, gnomAD, ACGS, and ClinGen.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Carrier Screening Test?

A comprehensive genetic test that identifies whether you carry variants that could be passed to your children. Carriers are typically healthy, but can unknowingly pass on serious inherited conditions.

How does the test work?

Collect a saliva sample with the swab, send it to our certified lab, and we perform a high-resolution analysis to detect carrier status for hundreds of inherited conditions. You receive a report in the app, typically 2 to 4 weeks after the lab receives your sample.

Who should take this test?

Individuals or couples planning to have children, people with a family history of genetic conditions, and individuals from populations with higher carrier risk (e.g. Ashkenazi Jewish, Mediterranean, African, or Southeast Asian descent).

What are the benefits?

Clarity about your carrier status, informed family-planning decisions with expert insight, reduced risk of passing on serious conditions, and access to expert support through optional consultations.

How common are these conditions?

While individual conditions are rare, collectively they are more common than many realise. Around 1 in 30 couples is at increased risk of having a child affected by a genetic condition.

Can I rely on family history instead?

Not entirely. Most people who carry a genetic condition have no family history of it. Genetic screening can reveal hidden risks that family history alone cannot detect.

If a condition already runs in my family, should I still do this?

Yes. Even if you’re aware of a specific condition, this test can screen for additional inherited conditions you may not know about.

Can I take this alongside other pregnancy tests like NIPT?

Yes. Carrier screening can be done alongside chromosome testing such as NIPT, but they serve different purposes: NIPT looks at chromosome conditions, while carrier screening looks at inherited single-gene variants.

What happens if my results indicate a higher risk?

We provide tools to help you understand your data, but we are not a diagnostic entity. If your results suggest higher risk, we can arrange a consultation with a qualified healthcare professional or genetic counsellor.

When should I take and send my sample?

Collect between Monday and Thursday and return it the same day using the prepaid envelope, ideally before midday. Avoid public holidays to prevent delays.

Where can I see my results?

Uploaded automatically to your secure profile in the app, with an email link, and downloadable as a PDF anytime.
